Getting Started

Face it: just about everyone loves working on science projects. Science fair projects give you a chance to plan an experiment and follow it through with hands-on work. Even though science projects can be fun and exciting, they can also be challenging for many students because they require a huge amount of work and discipline.

One of the important steps is to analyze your results.

10 Steps to Success

There are 10 simple steps that students can take in order to create amazing science fair projects that will not only teach them something new, but that will also help them impress the judges at the fair. Here are those 10 steps, including details about how to execute each step:

  1.    Decide what you want to do. In order to decide what kind of project you want to do, you need to choose a science project topic. This topic should be something that interests you. Working on a project that interests you will help to ensure that your project is fun and successful.

  2.    Study the topic. Before you begin your own experiment, make sure that you take time to learn as much as you can about the topic. Has the experiment been done before? What should you know before you begin the experiment? These questions can help to make sure that your experiment is thorough and successful.

  3.    Determine how you will do the project. The project plan is one of the most important steps towards creating a successful science project. Your project plan will determine how you will do the project and what timeline you will follow.

  4.    Get ready. By preparing your materials and timeline, you will be able to successful execute the experiment. Be sure that you know how to will measure results as well - and have any charts or graphs that you plan to use available.

  5.    Get working. As you do the experiment, take notes about what happens, what you observe, and what you might change. Photos also might help you when you try to explain how you executed the experiment.

  6.    Analyze results. In this step, you will review your data in order to determine what happened in your science fair experiment. Decide what the results are - and think critically about what those results mean.

  7.    Write the science project report. Take time to recap exactly what you did during your experiment. Provide background information and details that may be helpful for people to know about while they review your science project report. Also, share any conclusion that you have come up with on your own.

 8.    Build your display. Your science project display should be neatly organized and eye catching. Organization is the key to helping people understand how your experiment worked and what your results were.

 9.    Practice, practice, practice. One of the biggest things you can do in order to have a successful science project is to practice your presentation. Judges will ask you questions about your experiment, so be sure you are able to answer those questions in detail.

  10.    Relax. On the day of the fair, relax. You've already worked hard to make this science project a success. Now all you need to do is explain what you did and what it means.

This served as a guide to me and I went over each one of the steps mentioned in careful detail and went about my project accordingly. The result--a well-executed science project with hardly any last minute hiccups.
